Train.Treat.Repeat

The new year is upon us which means everyone is setting their New Year’s resolutions. A great way to stick to your resolutions is to include someone else, maybe someone with four legs? Here are some New Year’s resolutions you can do with your dog.

1. Eat Healthier

Fruits and vegetables are great for us and our dogs. A lot of people will stock the fridge with fresh fruits and veggies at the beginning of the year in an attempt to eat healthier. Consider using fruits, like berries or apples, as replacements for start by treats. You can also add steamed veggies like broccoli, beans, or carrots to your pup’s dish.

While considering what we’re eating we may also want to evaluate the quantities we’re eating. This applies to our dogs too. By ensuring they’re eating the correct amount we can keep them healthier for longer. Check the serving suggestion for the food you feed, but remember, it is a suggestion. Some dogs may need more or less depending on their metabolism and activity level.

2. Get Active

Exercising for humans increases levels of dopamine and serotonin in the brain, but it can also increase your dog’s level of happiness. Ever heard the saying a tired dog is a happy dog? Dogs who get to exercise and expend their energy are more relaxed at home, making for a happy owner too.

Try adding an extra walk to your schedule, or extending your current walk. The beginning of the year is a great time to start an exercise regiment in South Florida as temperatures are cooler and it will allow you and Fido to adjust to your new plan. As you increase your distance try looking for new places to walk and explore. You may even consider looking for a dog-friendly trail.

3. Stay Healthy

Have you done your annual physical? We sometimes find it easier to schedule our pups’ annual checkups than our own. Set a reminder to schedule your annual appointments just as we do for our dogs. Ensuring we are in our tip too shape will allow us to better care for our dogs’ long term.

Maybe your resolution is to floss daily? Be sure to check Fido’s teeth too! A great resolution is to start a new dental routine for the new year for you and your dog. There are many ways to care for your dog’s canines from brushing kits, water additives, and natural chews. Check with your vet or local pet store for options.

4. Explore More

Whether your dog is a city pup or a country canine, there’s always something to do. Lots of restaurants have outdoor seating that oftentimes is pet friendly and may even feature a doggie-specific menu. Dining al fresco gives your hound a chance to take in new sites and sounds while spending time with you out and about.

If you’ve already explored your city to the fullest it might be time to plan a trip for the new year. There are lots of pet-friendly destinations that are within driving distance of South Florida. Just remember to call ahead to ensure your accommodations allow dogs and check out our travel blog for more tips for your trip.

5. Learn Something New

It’s never too late to teach an old dog a new trick. That applies to dogs and humans alike. Maybe you’ve always wanted to learn a new language, take up a new skill, or participate in a group sport. All these can apply to your dog too! Think about joining a dog sport such as frisbee or flyball, teaching your dog some new tricks, or adding to their vocabulary. The average dog can learn 165 words!

Now is a great time to start! Set a monthly goal that correlates to each of your goals that way you’re able to keep track and ensure your New Year’s resolution is attainable for you and your pup.
